The Secret of the Nagas

SUMMARY

The Secret of the Nagas is the second book of the Shiva Trilogy. It is written by Amish Tripathi. It continues from the ending of the previous book, The Immortals of Meluha.

The book starts with Shiva rushing to save his wife Sati from an attacking Naga, who leaves behind coins with strange engravings on them before fleeing. After discussing with King Daksha and Dilipa, they come to know that the coin belongs to King Chandraketu, the ruler of the land of Branga in Eastern India. Later, Shiva and Sati travel to Kashi, where a number of Branga people inhabit, in order to get information on the Nagas. They are escorted by Shiva’s general Parvateshwar, associates Nandi and Veerbhadra, Ayurvati the doctor, and Bhagirath and Anandamayi, the prince and princess of Ayodhya.

At Kashi, Parvateshwar is gravely injured by some Branga people. Their leader, Divodas, gives Parvateshwar a healing herb which heals his wounds. Shiva learns from Ayurvati that the herb is only available at Panchavati, the capital of the Nagas. Divodas explains that they get the herbs from the Nagas due to a plague infesting Branga. Shiva decides to travel to Branga, but Sati remains at Kashi.

Meanwhile, Sati gives birth to Kartik, her son with Shiva. On and on, Sati meets her twin sister Kali, who is the queen of the Nagas and someone else, whom everyone thought was dead (I’m not revealing!). They were denounced by Daksha because of their deformities.

At Branga, Shiva meets the hermit-bandit Parashuram, who can enlighten him about the Nagas and the medicine. After defeating Parashuram, Shiva comes to know that he is a Vasudev, the group of scholars who have been guiding him on his journey. Parashuram is also surprised to see Shiva as the legendary Neelkanth; in remorse for his actions, he cuts off his left hand. He gives the recipe of the medicine to the people of Branga and joins Shiva’s journey.

The story goes on with how Shiva advances to his journey of unearthing the secret about the Nagas and how fate has other things surrounded around its finger for Shiva. With Shiva, Sati, and the others, this adventure is still moving on to the path of truth and realization. Will Shiva be able to know about the legendary Nagas? Who is that beast Naga who has been following Shiva and Sati? For questions like this in your reader minds, what are you waiting for? Just grab a copy of the book and start reading right away!

REVIEW

The second book of the Shiva trilogy continues the journey of Shiva and others, with lots of new characters and secrets cropping up from here and there. It is full of danger, thrill, mystery, action, modern science combined with mythology and romance. It is an amazing book, yet honestly, sometimes one might think that there is too much details, more than necessary.

Otherwise, it’s a brilliant book to read and I would highly recommend this to every reader, especially mythological book lovers.
