SUMMARY
The Warden is a prequel book of the Asylum series, written by Madeleine Roux. Here we go through the Brookline Asylum from the point of view of Jocelyn Ash, an intern (or would-be-nurse, whatever).
The book starts with Jocelyn and her friend, Madge getting off the bus and standing in front of the Brookline Asylum, looming above their head. After entering, a little while later, they meet the warden, Daniel Crawford. Even though Madge is more focused on locating handsome guys to flirt with, Jocelyn listens to Daniel, yet she doesn’t know why she feels uncomfortable and uneasy there.
On and on, they keep on doing their jobs as nurses, and almost every day, Jocelyn would hear screams coming from the basement side, but after one night of snooping around at night and getting almost caught, she didn’t dare to venture alone. Later, Jocelyn and Madge meet Lucy and Dennis respectively. When Jocelyn met Lucy, she felt pity for that little girl, who wasn’t more than maybe 7 or 8 years old, kept in a dingy, smelly, unhealthy room.
And from there, started the journey of Jocelyn Ash, in the Brookline Asylum, trying to help whoever she can after a very tragic incident. What happened? What about Lucy? What was so special about the warden, Daniel Crawford, that he made everyone fear him so much? And, what was lurking underneath the Asylum?
REVIEW
The Warden is a book which shows us what kind of an environment there actually was when the “Warden” used to preside in the Brookline Asylum. From the point of view of Jocelyn Ash, we see how she doubts the warden, his actions, words, and all the other things. It also has excerpts from the warden’s personal diary.
If you haven’t read the Asylum series yet, I would suggest to read them first to get a grip on what has been shown here easily. All things aside, this is a great book and would highly recommend to everyone, and especially mystery and thriller book readers.
